Anthony A. J. JakubowskiLos Angeles Fire Department expert and docudrama writer
by Gene Harubin Zygmont
Antony Alexander James Jakubowski was born on July 31, 1956, in Lynwood, California to Anglo-Polish parents, Doreen (Mayne) and Antoni Jakubowski. He attended Pater Noster High School, then the University of Redlands, where in 1980 he earned a BS degree in Business. He then joined the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) where, between 1980 and 1993, he received additional training with the LAFD and in various criminal justice courses with the Los Angeles Police Department.
His ten year tenure with the Los Angeles Fire Department as Firefighter, Paramedic and Arson lnvestigator, provided him with the raw material for his first novel, Fire City, a suspense thriller based on his own experiences. It has currently been optioned by Lorimar Studios for a possible television drama. Another docudrama, A Question of Motive, about an arson investigator who is himself an arsonist, is scheduled to be aired on NBC in the near future.
Jakubowski had heard many tales of atrocities in World War II from his father, who had served with the Polish armed forces in exile, and one of these, the massacre of 15,000 Polish prisoners of war and the possibility that one of these Polish officers had been a woman, made an indelible impression on him. His investigative background and writer's curiosity would not let this rumor go unchecked, so, in 1990, with his father as interpreter, he traveled to the U.S.S.R. to ascertain if this rumor was indeed fact. He soon translated his research results into a potent and powerful novel: Katyn: A Whisper in the Trees, a fictional account of an historical woman who had been held prisoner with other Polish officers and executed by order of Stalin in 1942 in the forest of Katyn. The book, published in 1991, is currently in print and enjoying readership among a wide audience.
Jakubowski has another career, that of martial arts instructor. He is an expert in Tao Kwon Do, Kuk Sul, and Ninjutsu. He is also an Olympic class fencer. When not engaged in cerebral or physical pursuits, he relaxes by playing guitar and piano. He has one son, Matthew and currently resides in Central California.
