Kozlowski, Dr. Edward D.
Dr. Edward D. Kozlowski, founder and first president of the Kopernik Society, was instrumental in the construction and dedication of the Kopernik Observatory in Vestal, New York in 1974, which was expanded to the Kopernik Space Education Center in 1993.
After graduating from Binghamton Central High School, he served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. Dr. Kozlowski graduated from St. Bonaventure University, completed postgraduate work at Loyola University and received his Dental Degree, Cum Laude, from the University of Buffalo Dental School. He received the Delta Sigma Delta Award for Excellence in Dentistry and was elected to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honorary Dental Society. He was a member of the N.Y.S. and B.C. Dental Society. He was past president of St. Bonaventure Alumni Association, Woodrow Wilson School Alumni, and B.C. Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Newman Foundation at SUNY Binghamton and the American Civic Association. He was a Board Member Emeritus of the Roberson Museum and Science Center. Dr. Kozlowski organized the Kopernik Polish Relief Committee in 1980, which continues to send packages to Poland and Eastern European countries.
In 1979 he received the "Polish Order of Merit" Medal at the Polish Consulate in New York City for his integral role in the building of the Kopernik Observatory. In 1994, Dr. Kozlowski was named by President Lech Walesa to received the Officer's Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland at the Polish Consulate in New York City for his continued efforts in promoting Polish Culture in the United States.
Dr. Kozlowski was a Board Member of the Polish Community Center, a parishioner and former Parish Council Member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Binghamton and a member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery Committee.
Described as a man, who gave so much of himself to the community, his tireless efforts to promote his Polish heritage will be forever remembered. He was loved by all and will be sadly missed.
Dr. Kozlowski is survived by his wife Valentina, son Matthew and (Judith) Kozlowski, daughters Kathleen and (James) Snyder, Karan Kozlowski and Kristen and (John) Gordon. He was predeceased by his son Mark and infant son Paul. He has six grandchildren.
