The fourth of eight children, son of John and Ann Pietruszka Krol, born on October 22, 1910 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was baptized at St. Hyacinth Church and attended the Parish Elementary School; his education continued at the Cathedral Latin High School in Cleveland and then at St. Mary's College in Orchard Lake, Michigan. John entered St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland and was orgained at St. John Cathedral, Cleveland, in February of 1937 by Bishop Joseph Schrembs.
Post graduate studies took place at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, where he received the Licentiate in Canon Law -- J.C.L., then the Pontifical Catholic University of America receiving a Doctorate in Canon Law -- J.C.L. As a young priest, he was elected President of the Canon Law Society of America in 1948. He was named a Domestic Prelate in March of 1951 and appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Cleveland in the same year. In June of 1958, Monsignor Krol was appointed Titular Bishop of Cadi and Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland and in December, became Vicar General of the Diocese of Cleveland. In 1960, Pope John XXIII named Bishop Krol as a member of the Preparatory Commission on Bishops and Diocesan Government.
On February 11, 1961, Bishop Krol was appointed Tenth Ordinary of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and installed as Archbishop at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul on March 22, 1961.
Archbishop Krol was elected Chairman of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference (PCC) in 1961 and in 1962 was named Undersecretary of II Vatican Council and a member of the Coordinating Committee.
On June 26, 1967, Archbishop Krol was elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals by Pope Paul VI. In 1971, Cardinal Krol was elected President of the national Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Unites States Catholic Conference and, over the years, has served on numerous committees including the Board of Governors of the 41st International Eucharistic Congress, Chairman of the Committee on Pastoral Research and Practice, a member of the Committee for Revision of the Code of Cannon Law, member of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelization of Nations, elected to the International Council of the secretariat of the Synod of Bishops in Rome and a member if the Prefecture of Economic Affairs of the Holy See.
Cardinal Krol speaks six languages and is the recipient of 18 Honorary Degrees including a Doctorate of Theology from the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), Poland.
Cardinal Krol has served as Chairman of the campaign for Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel at the national Shrine in Washington, D.C. and the campaign for Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA. He is on the advisory board of the National Federation for Decency, the Council for Trustees Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge and The President's Advisory Council for Private Sector Initiatives.
A close friend of Pope John Paul II, he died on March 3, 1996 and is buried in a crypt at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul.
