MISSING HUNTERS
By JOEL LANDAU
Gannett News --- Monday, February 11, 2008 --- FAIRFIELD, NJCoast Guard and New Jersey State Police personnel were searching Sunday evening for three hunters who were reported missing earlier in the day.
The trio -- identified as Zdzislaw Piorkowski, 59, of Richmond Street, Philadelphia; Joseph Karamuz of Hallowell Road, Huntington Valley, Pa.; and Janusz Terysner of Province Line Road, Princeton -- traveled to Cumberland County to go hunting Saturday, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman.
Coast Guard units from Cape May and state troopers from the Bivalve barracks searched Sunday for the hunters via helicopters, boats and land patrols, Jones said.
Authorities had not found the men by Sunday night, but Jones said the searchers' equipment has infrared technology and their work would continue through the night and this morning, if necessary.
About 2 p.m. Sunday, troopers found a vehicle and tow truck, used to carry small boats, at the end of Husted-Bateman Road in Fairfield. The vehicle was near a small estuary, and authorities believe the men took a small goose-hunting boat into the water.
The estuary leads to the Delaware Bay, but Jones did not believe the hunters intended to travel that far. "We're hoping if they had difficulty with the boat, they could get to land and hold up there," he said.
