Jastremski (Jastrzebski), Leon
Captain in the Confederate Army. Born in France in 1844; son of an exile of 1831 who was a doctor in the Polish Army. Came to America with his father, settling at first in Montreal, Canada, then came to Abbeville, La. In 1861 enlisted as a private in the 10th Infantry of La. under Gen. Magruder. He fought at Warwick, Williamsburg, Richmond. At Malvern Hill he became a prisoner and was exchanged. In 1862 received the rank of lieutenant and later made a captain. Was wounded at Chancellorsville, recovered and fought at Gettysburg. Again was captured. Returned in 1865. After the Civil War he settled at Baton Rouge and opened a business. Gained respect and political influence. In 1871 elected mayor of Baton Rouge and re-elected for another term. In 1879 elected delegate to the State Convention. President Cleveland sent him as consul general to Callao, Peru. Appointed State Secretary of Agriculture. In 1907 was nominated for Governor of Louisiana but death prevented his election. Married Rose Largnier and in his second marriage, S. L. Ashton, the daughter of the president of the Supreme Court of the State of Louisiana. His two sons of the first marriage reside in Baton Rouge. Died Nov. 23, 1907 in Baton Rouge, La.
