Ellis, Michael B.
Soldier. Son of Anthony Eliasz and Ann Krzyzanowski. His parents came from Poland to St. Louis, Mo. in 1879. Michael came to Chicago, Ill., in 1924. In battle at Montrelagne, France. Ellis alone captured 60 German soldiers, an account of which is made in Colonel Roosevelt's Rank and File. For his outstanding bravery in the first World War he received the Congressional Medal of Honor, presented by General J. J. Pershing in St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 22, 1919. As a hero of the first World War, was invited to carry the coffin of the Unknown Soldier to Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D. C. He died in Chicago, Ill, on Dec. 11, 1937. On January 19, 1938 his body was taken from St. Adalbert's cemetery, Chicago, Ill. and brought to Washington, D. C.; Jan. 20, 1938 buried in Arlington Cemetery.
