Obalski, Joseph
Mining engineer, professor. Born in France, 1852; educated there; appointed superintendent of mines for Province of Quebec, Canada, from 1881 to 1909; devoted much time in exploring the province; published a great number of reports and monographs on mining. In 1904, inspector of mining in Province of Quebec; a representative of the Department of Colonization, Mining and Geology, to verify discoveries of McKenzie. Report very encouraging determined to organize a mining company: Chibougaman Mining Co., in Montreal, Canada. Formerly professor of the Laval University, School of Polytechnic, later nominated honorary professor of said institution. Name connected with several discoveries in the Province of Quebec. Vice-president of the Canadian Mining Institute: awarded a gold medal by Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Some of his publications are: "Les Mines et mineraux de la province de Quebec," 1889; "L'or dans la province de Quebec," 1898; Les operations minieres dans la province de Quebec pour l'annee," 1900; Les industries minerales de Ia province de Quebec," 1900; "Le mica dans la province de Quebec," 1901; "Exposition universelle dIe Quebec," 1901. Married Mlle. Sosselin. Died in 1915.
