Kosciuszko's Insurrection
In 1794 Tadeusz Kosciuszko took an oath in the Krakow marketplace to liberate his country or perish in the attempt. This painting by Michal Stachowicz (who might have actually witnessed the event) commemorates the oath-taking.
Kosciuszko's Pledge
by Maria Konopnicka
(English Translation)All the bells are pealing
in the market square
citizens of Krakow
are gathering thereA joyous shout rings out,
like a cannon blast ...
the people's commander
is greeted at last!A Krakovian cloak
Kosciuszko dons here,
and uncovers his head
to answer the cheerHe uncovered his head,
he dropped to one knee
"My life now I pledge
to make our homeland free!""I pledge you my life,
l pledge you my soul
With God's holy help,
we will regain control!"A silent crowd now stands
on the market square,
Tadeusz Kosciuszko
made a solemn pledge there.
.....
The stones on which Kosciuszko stood in the marketplace have been preserved.
The words of the oath: "I, Tadeusz Kosciuszko, swear before God to entire Polish Nation that I will not use the power invested in me for private gain or oppression, but solely for the defense of the integrity of the borders, the restoration of self-determination of the Nation and the establishment of liberty for all. So help me God and the innocent suffering of his Son."
