Adamkiewicz, Ladislaus L., M.D.
Physician and surgeon. Born Feb. 20, 1892 in Milwaukee, Wis. Graduate of Marquette University, School of Medicine. Enlisted in the United States Navy, April 6, 1917. Was aboard the U. S. S. Jacob Jones which was sunk 35 miles off the Irish coast by a German submarine. He spent 18 hours clinging to a raft before rescued by a British gunboat. He is the only survivor of the U. S. S. Jones which had a crew of 133 men and officers. Dr. Adamkiewicz saw service with the U. S. Navy throughout the World War and was active in China, Philippines, Guam Island and other U. S. naval bases. Since 1932 Medical Officer at the U. S. Naval Hospital, San Diego, Calif. In 1939 national delegate to the National Convention of the American College of Surgeons in Philadelphia, Pa. Commander (Senior Grade) Dr. Adamkiewicz, hero of the World War was attending Physician of Admiral Byrd's Expedition to the South Pole in Nov. 1939, and a representative of the U. S.
