Adamski Edward L. (1935 - 2010)
Air Force veteran

Edward L. Adamski, 75, who lost his hearing in an explosion while serving in the Air Force, died of metastatic pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at his home in Gloucester City.

Mr. Adamski entered the Air Force in 1954 and served at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and in France. He was in charge of setting telegraph lines underground.

In Texas, Mr. Adamski's partner used a lighter to check for scorpions and other dangers in the hole where a line was to be installed, said Mr. Adamski's son, Edward. The lighter set off an explosion of fumes that had built up underground, he said.

Mr. Adamski suffered burns all over his body and permanent hearing loss in both ears, his son said. He finished his service and was honorably discharged in December 1957.

The Philadelphia native went to work as a forklift operator for Owens Corning in Barrington. He retired in 1988 but got bored and took a job running errands and doing odd jobs at Hungerford & Terry Inc., in Clayton, where he worked for about 10 years, his family said.

Mr. Adamski graduated in 1952 from Southeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia, where he met his future wife, Doris Dickerson. They married in 1954.

In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Adamski is survived by a daughter, Nancy Wilding; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grand-children. A son, Stephen, died in 2006.

A Funeral Mass was said Monday at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Gloucester City. Interment was in Camden County Veterans Cemetery in Camden.
