Former Hazleton High and Franklin and Marshall College athlete Dr. John Andrefsky will be inducted into the Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame Hazleton Chapter Sunday, Oct. 21.
At HHS, Andrefsky lettered in basketball in 1980-81 and 1981-82. He was named to the East Penn League Division 2 All-Star first team, and was a Lehigh Valley All-Star in '81-82 and a Wilkes-Barre Sunday Independent All Star in '81-82.
"John was an outstanding basketball player and an outstanding young man," said Chris Perry, who was his coach at HHS, "He was a tremendous competitor and a hard worker. I knew that he would be a success in any field he chose."
He also lettered in varsity track and field from 1978-79 through '82, competing in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4x100 meter relay and the long jump. He was on record setting 4x100 meter, 4x200 meter and shuttle hurdle relay teams.
In recognition of his high school achievements he was awarded the Andy Fierro Scholarship.
Andrefsky was selected for induction for his tremendous achievements in the field of medicine as well as his athletic ability.
He is currently director of Neuromedical/Neurosurgical Intensive Care at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio.
He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1982, Franklin and Marshall with a BA degree in chemistry in 1986 and Hahnemann University School of Medicine with a MD in 1990.
At Franklin & Marshall he was on both the honors list and the dean's list. He was awarded a Hackman Research Fellowship in 1986.
At Hahnemann in Philadelphia he was awarded the Leon Herman Medical Scholarship and honors in clinic neurology, advanced neuroanatomy and pharmacology.
He interned at Hahnemann in 1990 and 1991 and was a neurology resident at Pennsylvania Hospital for a year and neurology chief resident at the same hospital for two years until 1994. His rotations included Pennsylvania Hospital, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
He was a Neurointensive Care Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation from July 1994 to June 1995.
Andrefsky holds medical licenses in Pennsylvania and Ohio and is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neuroneurology. He was named 2000 Teacher of the Year at The Cleveland Clinic and he received the "Citizen of the Day" award earlier this year in Cleveland.
Among his many prestigious appointments at the Cleveland Clinic he is on the LifeBanc Board of trustees and the Committee to Revise CCF Brain Death Policy.
Since 1987, he has been involved in research on a variety of neurosurgical and stroke problems. And a co-investigator in a variety of fields related to neurosurgery.
He has authored 19 publications, some of them in conjunction with other physicians and dozens of articles.
He is in demand as a speaker, having made approximately 40 appearances.
He and his wife Nancy reside in Solon, Ohio with their four children. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Andrefsky of Hazleton. His father was a standout athlete at Weatherly High School.
