Jerzmanowski, Erasmus J.
Engineer, industrialist, philanthropist. Born in 1844 in Domanikow near Kalisz, Poland. Pioneer of the American Gas Industry. Took part in Polish insurrection against Russia in 1863; fled to Paris, graduated from Paris university, Polytechnic Institute. When in New York elected vice-president of Equitable Gas Light Company. During the struggle between Polish National Alliance and Catholic Hierarchy in U.S., in 1886 explained the good attitude of P.N.A. toward the church. He organized a Bureau for Polish Immigrants in New York City. Appointed commissioner for U.S. of Polish National Treasury in Rappersville, Switzerland. In 1896 returned to Poland, settled in Prokocim. near Krakow, where he died Feb. 11, 1909.
