Career: resident (oral and maxillofacial surgery), Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, 1956-58; clinical prof., Tempie University School of Dentistry, 1958-87; chief, Dental / Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Roxborough Memorial Hospital, Philadelphia, 1961-93; Retired.

Author: numerous lectures, scientific papers and articles in professional journals; editor, Newsletter of Delaware Valley Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, and Pennsylvania Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.

PENNSYLVANIA - Dr. Anthony 'Tony' Lewandowski, age 80 of Lafayette Hill, died Monday, August 25, 2008 in the Chestnut Hill Hospital.

Dr. Lewandowski was born to Polish immigrant parents, Aleksy and Stephanie (Sokol) Lewandowski, who initially settled in South Philadelphia. At an early age, his father taught him printing, especially typesetting on the Linotype. He received his elementary school education at St. Stanislaus Parochial School and attended Central High School and LaSalle College in Philadelphia.

Dr. Lewandowski graduated from Temple University Dental School and, subsequently, completed the post graduate program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine and Pennsylvania Hospital. He held diplomate status of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 1961.

Among Dr. Lewandowski's appointments/offices formerly held were as follows: Clinical Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University Dental School, Chief of the Department of Dental/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of Roxborough Memorial Hospital, President of the Delaware Valley Society and of the Pennsylvania Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, President of the Philadelphia County Dental Society, President of the Temple University Dental Alumni Society and President of the Philadelphia County Dental Society.

Additionally, Dr. Lewandowski was the Editor of the Newsletter of the Pennsylvania Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Editor of the Journal of the Philadelphia County Dental Society.

He also served on the Parish Pastoral Council of St. Mary Church, Conshohocken, where he was lector at Polish language service.

Military service included active duty with the U.S. Navy Dental Corps (assigned to the Marine Corps for 2 1/2 years) and 36 years of the Naval Reserve service, including enlisted service, retiring in 1982 with the rank of Captain.

Recipient of 1992 Outstanding Catholic Dentist of the Year Award, 1992 Temple University General Alumni Association Certificate of Honor, 1992 Recognition Award presented by the Medical Staff of Roxborough Memorial Hospital and 1992 Distinguished Service Award for the Pennsylvania Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Chris) Lewandowski, two daughters, Ann Lewandowski & her husband Patrick Dennis of Hagerstown, MD, and Ferne Schrider and her husband Jeff of Skippack; one son: Anthony J. 'Chris' Lewandowski and his wife Cindy of Rosemont, two sisters: Sophie and Helen Lewandowski both of Wilmington, DE, eight grandchildren: Evan, Mara, Liza, F. Sarah, Olivia, Tara, Paige and Owen. Predeceased by siblings: Stanley and Theresa.

Funeral Mass was held August 29 at Saint Mary's Church, Oak and Hector Street, Conshohocken, PA. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Tamaqua.
